Self-Compassion Workshop

Self-compassion flows from the recognition that, just as we care for the needs and suffering of others, our own needs and suffering deserve to be cared for. Sometimes this requires tender acceptance; sometimes this requires fierce defense; and sometimes this requires courageous forging of a new path.

Mama bears and papa bears caring for a child challenged by autism are especially in need of this kind of self-compassion.

This series of support group sessions will provide you the opportunity to:

  • Identify and embody the three components of self-compassion:
    • Self-kindness,
    • Mindfulness—including mindful movement,
    • Common humanity;
  • Develop skills for responding in a compassionate way whenever you or your child suffers;
  • Explore the roles of tender and fierce self-compassion;
  • Practice strategies to soothe and comfort yourself and/or your child, making it easier to handle difficult emotions so that you can lead a more balanced life, draw boundaries, fight against injustice, or motivate change.
